About the Valley Range Solar Project & Battery Facility
Solar panels, lithium battery stations, and high power transmission lines as far as the eye can see.
This project is a 900 acre solar installation with 8 acres of lithium battery storage (called a BESS facility). The project is proposed at the base of the National Park on land zoned for Agriculture. The developer, Accelergen Energy, is owned by Fengate Asset Management (the largest developer of data centers in Canada link). According to the Durango Herald, Accelergen has leased approximately 2100 acres of land (including state lands neighboring the project). This begs the question of what are the other 1,192 acres for?
Most importantly, lithium battery storage facilities like this are new technology and have a dismal safety record. They can create fires which cannot be extinguished and have created ecological disaster sites across the Western United States. This does not belong on Ag land next to homes, tourist businesses, and Montezuma Counties largest tourist attraction.

Why Here?

Shutterstock image of a hiker at a Mesa Verde National Park overlook
There are so many places where Accelergen could build 900 acres of solar panels and 8 acres of lithium battery storage without causing any real problems. Why they chose to propose a project like this at the base of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado's only UNESCO World Heritage site, strains imagination.

Lithium Battery (BESS) Facility Fires
Lithium battery storage facilities are new technology with a bad track record.
This project includes 8 acres of lithium battery storage (called a BESS facility). BESS fires are very difficult to extinguish and are typically allowed to burn themselves out over the course of several days. The 2025 Moss Landing fire shown here burned for 2 days and reignited repeatedly over the course of a month.
The 2025 fire dispersed 55,000 pounds of carcinogenic metals into the surrounding area for several miles surrounding the site and required the evacuation of 1,500 people for days at a time repeatedly. Today the site is a federally managed EPA clean-up site.
During the month of flare-ups, negative national press caused a collapse in the local tourism economy with negative effects still being felt today almost 2 years after the fire. This could happen here. This does not belong next to our National Park.

About Us
This site was built by Bryan Davis and Joanne Haruta, the owners of the local Dotty Wampus Chocolate Factory
This site and the social media ad campaign were built and managed by Bryan and Joanne. Funding for the initial ads came from us and from a group of our neighbors who all chipped in to raise awareness of this proposed monster project.
We believe in property rights. Solar projects of this scale do not belong on Ag land next to homes, farms and tourist businesses. This project is so big, and the batteries are so dangerous, that it threatens the property values and quality of life for everyone around it. As a community we attempted to negotiate with Accelergen Energy and found them to be impossible to negotiate with. Thank you for your support.
